Digital Photography for Community Health Activists

During the Spring of 2011, eight high school students in San Francisco were offered an opportunity to learn how to use photography as a tool to create awareness and social change. Over 12 weeks, each young photographer developed a personal photographic story related to the broad issue of health in their communities, and voiced their positions on what makes a community healthy. A selection of this work was presented at the Human Rights Summit, hosted by San Francisco State University on 5/2/11.

About the Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse

The mission of the Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse is to create and manage a dedicated space in San Francisco's District 11 (Excelsior, OMI, Cayuga, Crocker, Outer Mission) where artists, youth, and community members convene, exchange, learn, create and exhibit artistic and cultural works. The Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse will be an engine that transforms the cultural, civic and economic vitality of District 11.

We pursue this mission through revitalization of the historic Geneva Office Building and Powerhouse site, providing artistic, cultural and educational programming for youth and adults of all cultures and ages, and serving as a platform for creative work undertaken by District 11 residents.

The Powerhouse's Arts Apprenticeship Program

Geneva Car Barn provides paid apprenticeships in culinary, media, literary, visual, design, and technical arts to underserved youth, ages 14-17, who live or attend school in District 11.

Youth apply for a spring, summer or fall apprenticeship, request a letter of recommendation from an adult, and go through an interview process. Twenty-four applicants who demonstrate motivation, commitment, and alignment with the program's goals are invited into the program as apprentices.

Apprentices experience an intensive curriculum of personal, professional and artistic development through fun and challenging weekly classes, field trips, and Saturday workshops.

In Summer and Fall 2010 we offered apprenticeships in wood design, culinary arts, theatre arts and audio production. For Spring 2011 youth will be able to apply for apprenticeships in creative writing and digital photography. Our partners are award-winning youth organizations Youth Speaks, Bay Area Video Coalition/BUMP Records, 826 Valencia, and SF Camerawork.

The Spring 2011 Digital Photography Apprenticeship

Students participating in the Geneva Car Barn Youth Apprenticeship Photography Program learn all the skills they need to wield a DSLR camera, and tell the stories that are important to them and their community. Through field trips, guest speakers and site visits to professional settings, the art apprenticeship students see how photography can be an essential tool for sharing their stories and letting the world know what’s meaningful to them. At the end of twelve weeks, their photographic accomplishments will be celebrated with a public showcase of their work.

Instructor

Born in Buffalo, NY, Kate Cielewich Gentzke spent five years living in Central and Eastern Europe before relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in September 2008. Her photographic work explores the liminal realm between self and image, representation and lived experience. She graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in photography from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2002, and in 2006 received an MA with Honors in Humanities from Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany. In 2001, Kate was awarded the Rumsey Scholarship which funded her travel and photographic work throughout Greece and Sicily. She was also a Jacobs University graduate fellowship recipient from 2004 through 2006, and has exhibited her work in New York, Ohio, California and abroad. Currently, Kate is the Digital Instructor for San Francisco's only Photo-Mentoring Program, First Exposures, and teaches Digital Photography for Geneva Car Barn's Youth Arts Apprenticeship Program.
